The weather is warm and the days are longer. With the harsh winter<br \/>\nbehind us, it\u2019s time to dust off your saddle and get busy. Spring does present some<br \/>\nunique challenges though. The grass is abundant, flies and ticks are appearing, and<br \/>\nyour horse is shedding like crazy. These 20 tips and tricks will get you set up for<br \/>\nsuccess, so you can focus on the good parts like riding!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spring Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Acclimate your horse to spring grass gradually. You can ease them onto pasture<br \/>\nby starting with 15 minutes and increasing the time each day. By day 21, they<br \/>\nshould be fully adjusted. This will help prevent laminitis and digestive upset.<\/li>\n<li>Get out your fly and tick repellents. These can include sprays, masks, sheets,<br \/>\nand various traps.<\/li>\n<li>Wash and put away your horse\u2019s winter blankets. You\u2019ll have so much more<br \/>\nspace in your barn when you bag up those bulky blankets.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule a spring checkup! It\u2019s a great idea to have your vet out for annual<br \/>\nvaccines, a Coggins test, and basic exam.<\/li>\n<li>Have the dentist out too! Before you get too busy riding, make sure your horse\u2019s<br \/>\nmouth is comfortable and they don\u2019t have any sharp points. Your dentist or vet<br \/>\ncan file the edges down.<\/li>\n<li>Some riders pulled their horse\u2019s shoes in the winter. It\u2019s time to get them back<br \/>\non, especially if you\u2019ll be riding on hard surfaces or rocky trails. Alternatively,<br \/>\nbarefoot horses can wear boots to protect their feet this spring.<\/li>\n<li>Consider your horse\u2019s body condition score. Their nutritional needs may change<br \/>\nonce you start riding more or they go out to pasture. A qualified nutritionist can<br \/>\noffer guidance in making any necessary changes.<\/li>\n<li>Bring your horse back to work slowly. Develop a plan that consists of walking and<br \/>\nlight trotting in the beginning.
