\nTake some time to reflect on what you would like to achieve as a rider. This can be as
\nsimple as riding three times a week or something more complex like entering your first show in a
\nmonth or two. Your goals should be realistic. They will keep you going when life gets
\nvery hard or busy.
\nA SMART goal will help you to be more productive and focused. This acronym stands
\nfor Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Here\u2019s an example to
\nget you brainstorming\u2026
\nSpecific: I have a three-year-old horse that I would like to get started under saddle.
\nMeasurable: At the end of 90 days, I would like to be able to walk, trot, and canter this
\nhorse under saddle.
\nAttainable: I have trained others before, so I have experience with young and green
\nhorses.
\nRelevant: Training is my passion. I\u2019m motivated to start this horse myself.
\nTime-bound: I will start with groundwork this weekend. After 30 days, I would like to
\nhave the saddle on their back. I will spend the remaining 60 days on groundwork and
\nundersaddle training.
\nIt can be helpful to have short-term targets that make your long-term goal less daunting.
\nRemember, you\u2019ll need to be somewhat flexible. Hurdles are bound to come up!<\/p>\n
\nTime is a valuable resource! You can make the most out of it by staying organized.
\nKeep your tack and riding apparel tidy. You should be able to find everything easily. If
\nyou have your own barn, then create a designated tack space for each horse with their
\nbridle, saddle, girth, brushes, etc. Each halter should be hung on their stall or by the<\/p>\n
\nspace in your car trunk.<\/p>\n
\nMake the most out of the time you do have to ride. This doesn\u2019t mean cramming a
\nbunch of things into an hour, but rather picking one or two specific things to work on. It can
\nbe helpful to school and exercise your horse with what they are good at, then progress to one new
\nexercise. Try to end on a good note!<\/p>\n
\nYour expectations must match your reality. You need to know your schedule and
\navailability. If you\u2019re already struggling to ride once a week, then don\u2019t set a goal of
\nriding five times a week. Keep in mind that obstacles are also likely to come up in the
\nweather, injuries, financial struggles, etc. Don\u2019t let them get you down. Keep your chin
\nup and work through them. It\u2019s okay to take a week or two off, but make sure to come
