Ration balancers are an ideal way to supplement a forage-based diet without any additional grains or concentrated feeds being necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they are heavily fortified, you only need to feed a small amount of a ration balancer\u2014usually between 1 and 2.2 lbs per day for the average horse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ration Balancers vs. Complete Feeds<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to get ration balancers and complete feeds confused since they both contain high levels of nutrients. However, the two products are very different. Complete feeds are designed to be fed as a horse\u2019s sole food ration and are often used with older horses who cannot eat hay due to dental issues. A complete feed provides high levels of fiber and nutrition BUT only if fed at the recommended feeding rate, which is a large amount.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A ration balancer, on the other hand, provides all of the vitamins and minerals a horse needs (excluding salt) but is meant to be fed in small amounts. It is only a good option if your horse can eat plenty of grass or hay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-34986\" src=\"https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis-560x373.jpg 560w, https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis-160x107.jpg 160w, https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/yourhorsefarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Laminitis.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Which Horses Can Benefit from a Ration Balancer?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ration balancers may not be the best choice for performance horses in hard work or any horse that has trouble holding weight (because they don\u2019t provide enough additional calories), they are a great choice for many other horses including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mature, idle horses;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horses in light to moderate work;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breeding stock;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young, growing horses;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overweight horses or those with metabolic issues; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHot\u201d horses who can\u2019t handle traditional commercial feeds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As long as a horse is eating plenty of good-quality hay or pasture and maintaining their weight, a ration balancer can fill in any nutritional gaps that may be missing in the diet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Types of Ration Balancers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ration balancers come in two main formulas: 1.) those designed to be fed with grass hays and 2.) those designed to be fed with alfalfa or legume hays.
