\u00a0Some factors may be different depending on if you are building an indoor arena vs. an outdoor arena. \u00a0 It is also important to consider what discipline you will be riding and how much daily traffic your arena footing will get.<\/div>\n
\n

Horse health and soundness can be greatly affected by the surface that the horse trains on.\u00a0 Quality arena footing provides the horse with stability and most important confidence.\u00a0 It minimizes the concussion of the footfall, absorbs shock, provides support, and provides energy back to the horse.\u00a0 The correct footing has the right amount of firmness, cushioning, rebound, and grip.<\/p>\n

Base<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The base provides a solid foundation for your arena footing.\u00a0 I was once told the base is almost more important than the footing itself because without the right base the footing won\u2019t perform at its optimum.\u00a0 When installing your base drainage needs to be considered.\u00a0 The fall or crown of the base needs to be professionally done in order to provide the correct run-off for drainage.\u00a0 There are base options that are more economical and there are options that are a larger investment but guarantee arena use in all weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Sand<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Choose the right sand!\u00a0 It is incredibly important that you choose the right sand for your arena footing.\u00a0 There are thousands of types of sand in the U.S. and different types occur in different areas of the country.\u00a0 Not all sands are appropriate for riding arenas.<\/p>\n

Textile and Fiber<\/h3>\n

Textiles and fibers are added to the sand.\u00a0 The textiles retain water thereby binding with the sand particles to provide cushion and stability.\u00a0 Rubber is another material that can be added to horse footing.\u00a0 It provides cushion and drainage to sands that may compact more than others.<\/p>\n

Hydration<\/h3>\n

Watering footing is essential unless you install a waterless and dust-free footing<\/a>.\u00a0 Dust can be very harmful to both human and horse.\u00a0 Footing that is too dry does not allow the textile and sand to bind properly resulting in a shifty, unstable surface.\u00a0 Waterless footing is a bigger investment.\u00a0 Other footing options are less expensive but take a bit more time to maintain.<\/p>\n

Grooming Equipment<\/h3>\n

Grooming your footing regularly to remove hoof divots and to mix the sand and fiber is necessary.\u00a0 The correct equipment you use to groom your footing is important.\u00a0 You want to choose a groomer with tines that will mix the sand and textiles.\u00a0 You also want to choose something that will compact the footing as well.<\/p>\n

These are the basics to consider when you\u2019re deciding what arena footing to purchase.\u00a0 It\u2019s best to research different footing companies and talk to a footing expert to help you decide what is best for you and your horse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
